That’s a wrap! Our third year offering two Ocean Academy online courses focused on expanding ocean literacy, for a diverse group of South African participants. The courses consisted of 6 x 3h30min sessions and covered a number of themes, including:

• What does the ocean mean for life on earth, and to each of us 
• Marine and coastal biodiversity and ecosystem services 
• A solutions-based focus on challenges facing our oceans and coasts 
• An introduction to climate change and what it means for our oceans and coasts 
• An introduction to the blue economy 
• How can we contribute to healthier oceans, Citizen Science and 
• Science Communication: Writing workshop 

The first Ocean Academy took place from 7 – 16 April 2025.  The second Ocean Academy course took place from 21-30 July 2025. In line with programme requirements, participants were expected to achieve at least 80% attendance, equivalent to a minimum of four out of the six sessions. A total of 31 participants successfully completed the training and received certificates of participation.

The partnership with the Two Oceans Aquarium was productive and very positive, providing course participants with valuable insights from experienced presenters and focusing on practical projects. These projects included:

• An overview of South African marine protected areas.
• An exploration of marine and coastal biodiversity in South Africa, including a virtual tour of the Two Oceans Aquarium exhibits.
• A virtual tour of the turtle rehabilitation facility, featuring interactive discussions on practical considerations associated with the rehabilitation of marine wildlife.
• A focus on marine wildlife management in environments where urban and wildlife areas intersect intensively.

Overall participant feedback

The course was widely described as well-organised, comprehensive, and engaging, offering a broad range of relevant and thought-provoking topics. Participants valued the depth of knowledge demonstrated by the presenters, highlighting their passion, expertise, and ability to make complex concepts accessible. Many appreciated the balance between scientific knowledge, governance frameworks, and practical case studies, while the inclusion of on-the-ground experts, such as those involved in aquarium and rehabilitation tours. Several noted that the course fostered a sense of belonging to a learning community, with networking opportunities and shared discussions contributing significantly to both professional and personal growth. A strong outcome was a shift in personal awareness and responsibility, with participants reflecting on their own actions, community roles, and future career aspirations. While the online delivery format was appreciated for enabling access to a diverse South African group, some participants acknowledged challenges with connectivity. Overall, the course was regarded as inspiring and transformative.
